Learning environment
Our spaces
At Mendip House we pride ourselves in providing safe and nurturing environments that encourage your child to develop their curiosity and independence.
Whilst play is very important, we believe that experiences offered should extend a play-centred curriculum. All children are encouraged to socialise, but at the same time become independent and confident. They are given the possibilities through a curriculum approach to develop physical skills, language and communication, sensory and emotional skills. Mendip House children are motivated, caring, well developed and confident individuals, who are well prepared for starting school when the time comes.
Each child has their own key person with whom they form a close relationship; the children take advantage of key group times twice daily.

Pre-School Room
This is a large room providing children aged two to five years a challenging environment with plenty of space in which to learn and explore. This room is divided up into a quiet corner/ library, wet play area, home corner, dressing up, and space to utilise our many resources. Children are divided up into groups as appropriate with their Key Worker but can also come together for social activities.
Courtyard Garden
We’re very proud of our interesting and attractive courtyard garden which has developed into a special feature of our setting. It is safe and secluded and is especially popular with our children. There is a pirate ship on which they can climb and sail away. A dedicated muddy area with its own kitchen, somewhere mud pies have become a specialty.
A section of the garden is covered with a canopy, allowing the outside space to be accessed in all weathers. We also have an art studio and a herb garden in our outdoor space. Babies and toddlers have their own separate, safe and dedicated area, where they can explore and develop individually under the watchful eye of Peppa Pig and her family.
Sunshine Room
We are particularly proud of our light and airy Sunshine Room. A large and dedicated space located on the first floor, this is where our babies and toddlers have a chance to reach their full potential.
At Mendip House we follow the Early Years Foundation stage and concentrate on the three Prime Areas for Development – i.e Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. Babies and toddlers have the opportunity to take take part in many different sensory activities, from cooking to water play – body painting is a particular favourite! We also have plenty of books, stories and use nursery rhymes to aid communication language development.
A lot of open-ended resources have been introduced to the Sunshine Room, along with resources that encourage children’s interests. We have a ‘key person’ system in place, so that you and your child are able develop a real bond with one person who will get to know your child well.
We also understand that for some parents this may be the first time that you have left your child. We focus hard on transitions, always taking great care to listen to your needs and concerns. We’re here to support not only your child, but you too! To help with this, we offer stay and play sessions along with your free two hour settling in session.
